It's always been a dream of mine to illustrate a children's book. I've designed many children's books, but never illustrated an entire book.
This past year I got my wish—and more. I signed up with two publishers to illustrate two picture books. The first one was released in January 2025, called You're Not Invited! An Ooey-Gooeys Adventure. The author and I have already begun a book tour throughout Los Angeles, visiting schools and book fairs to read and give an art demonstration.
It's a story about three bugs who are not invited to the queen bee's party, and how they end up saving her from a monster anyway. The funny thing is, I'm not sure I'd ever drawn a bug before.
Even so, I dove into the project determined to bring out the bug in all of us, and it was an interesting adventure. I made sketches for each character, nothing too scary, but trying to get emotion and expression into each drawing. I drew points of view that made sense for the story. I tried to eliminate anything that did add to the story in a meaningful way. Along the way, I figured out how to draw bugs.
The result became a book I'm proud of. I hope you'll check it out on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
